Bambu Warriors recycles used washing machine cylinders as pots for growing bamboo!
By: Christian Robertson, Owner/Operator I am often looking for macetas/pots for planting bamboo that would be large enough to accommodate a 10 – 20 foot tall bamboo plant. I was having a hard time finding something that had the stability needed for withstanding wind. Most of the clay pots were expensive and in the $1000 – 2500 pesos range per pot. One day I drove past a washing machine repair shop that had some old beat-up washing machine cylinders in front of the shop. These were made from stainless steel metal or galvanized plastic, both materials that would take hundreds of years to break down in a landfill. I stopped to talk to the owner and learned that the canisters had built in drainage at the bottom and were the same diameter top and bottom. The proprietor had no use for them and it would cost him money to bring to the landfill.
A perfect solution for everyone!
I have started buying canisters, which only cost $100 pesos per six canisters. I bring them back to my Bambu Warriors vivero on the east side of Chapala, where my team paints them inside and out with colorful latex paint transforming them into perfect bamboo planters. We add compost and soil, and plant bamboo. You can now buy potted bamboo in recyled containers for just $500 pesos per plant! We are keeping large items out of landfills, reusing them as bamboo planters and passing on the savings to our customers who can now buy tall bamboo in an attractive planter. Please let me know if you see additional sources for these canisters. We are now always on the lookout. And stop by the Bambu Warriors vivero in Chapala, between Greg’s Auto and Colibri Cafe on the left side of the highway. Hope to see you soon at Bambu Warriors!
